As a member, you get the credit - capital credits - for helping sustain your local cooperative. You may not realize it, but when you live on Jo-Carroll Energy's lines, you are a member. In a local cooperative like Jo-Carroll Energy, every member owns the business.
One way members see that ownership is through capital credits. Because Jo-Carroll Energy is a member-owned cooperative, we charge only what it costs to provide you with service and give back the rest. Jo-Carroll Energy does not technically earn profits. Any revenues over and above the cost of doing business are considered "margins". And one of the benefits of being a co-op member is sharing in the margins in the form of capital credits.
Only cooperatives make every customer an owner of the business. It's even one of our seven guiding principles -- Member Economic Participation.
