Natural Gas Safety

If you smell gas   |  Turning off your Gas

  • Look for the blue flame. If pilot lights and burners have a steady, blue flame, they are operating correctly. (Decorative gas fire logs are the only exception. Their flame is usually yellow.)
  • Have all gas appliances, furnaces, vents, flues, chimneys and gas lines in your home or business inspected every year or two by qualified industry professionals.
  • Keep the areas around all appliances and equipment clean and unblocked to allow for proper air flow.
  • Follow manufacturer instructions for the care and use of gas appliances and equipment.
  • Make sure there is at least one multipurpose fire extinguisher in your home or place of business.
  • If you use natural gas you should have at least one battery operated CO detector in the bedroom area.
  • Never use a stove or oven to heat your home.
  • In the laundry room, keep filters and exhausts cleaned and properly vented. Check vents regularly for blockage.
  • Don't store flammable liquids near the furnace or gas water heater.
  • Keep the area around the water heater free of clutter.
  • To prevent scalding, set water heat no higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Have your furnace inspected every year and keep the filter clean.
  • Never hang things from utility pipes.
  • Natural gas is delivered through a network of underground pipelines; locate them on your property before you dig by calling 811.
If you smell gas and suspect a gas leak
  • Leave the house immediately.
  • Don’t use your phone; call your gas supplier or 911 for assistance from a neighbor’s house.
  • Don’t light a match.
  • Don’t turn on a light.
  • Don’t switch on anything electrical
